Hampton Roads Volunteer Achievement Awards
2007 Recipients

Outstanding community volunteers were recognized at the Hampton Roads Volunteer Achievement Awards on April 25, 2007.  This event also celebrated VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads' 50th anniversary.  Awards were presented to honorees by co-chairs Suzanne Puryear of The Planning Council and Mike Hughes of The United Way of South Hampton Roads.

Lenora Mathews Lifetime Achievement Award:

Vince and Suzanne Mastracco, support a variety of community organizations serving the arts, youth, business development and community building.

 

Individual Adult Volunteers

 

Daniel Baxter, volunteers with Virginia Beach Clean Community Commission and other environmental programs

 


 
David Brown, volunteers at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and currently serves as board chair

 
Brian Friedman is the  volunteer founder of Hospitality for the Homeless
Dr. Carolyn Hines is an active business and development volunteer who has shepherded meaningful programs that are assisting citizens of Hampton Roads

Individual Youth Volunteers


 
Victoria Lannetti  volunteers with Special Olympics, NEST and Girl Scouts.
Fitz Shipp volunteers for Very Special Arts, a program for adults with disabilities to give them a chance to shine in the spotlight.

Individual Military Volunteer

Thomas Cole Atwell of USS Carl Vinson, volunteers with a variety nonprofits including mentoring programs, organizations serving the elderly and school activities.

Military Group Volunteers


 
Personnel at Combat Direction Systems Activity Dam Neck volunteer for multiple organizations including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Special Olympics and St. Mary's Home for Disabled Children.
USS Carl Vinson sailors volunteer at multiple organizations, and in just one day, dedicated 4,000 hours of volunteer service

Youth Group Volunteers

Landstown High School Intro to Design Students design and craft cloth tote bags that REACH volunteers use to give to children in shelters with a new book.

 

Community Group Volunteers


 
Ginny Batteen Hawks & Rachel Clement, volunteer for Child and Family Services and helped make the dreams of 100 children in need come true.

 
Larry Grossman & Larry Sawyer plan an annual fundraiser football bowl that raises money for HER shelter and awareness about domestic violence.

 
Lee's Friends Mailing Support Group volunteers do countless mailings for the nonprofit, getting out newsletters, fundraising letters and more. 
Project: Dream BIG volunteers are college students who are volunteering at local shelters and other programs serving at risk youth.

Family Volunteers

Multiple generations of the Scott Smith family help build wheelchair ramps, lead support groups, rehab homes and more for ALS clients.

 

Faith-Based Volunteers

Brighton Rock A.M.E. Zion Church operates an extensive outreach program for neighborhood youth and seniors.

 

Nonprofit Volunteer Program

The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center was honored for its excellent volunteer management program.
