NORFOLK,
VA (August 1, 2007) – VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads has
been recognized as the nation’s outstanding
volunteer center as the recipient of the 2007 George
W. Romney Volunteer Center Excellence Award. This
prestigious, national award was presented by The
Points of Light Foundation at the Annual National
Conference on Community Volunteering and National
Service. The conference was convened in
Philadelphia, Pa. by the foundation and the
Corporation for National and Community Service July

“This is an incredible honor,” notes VOLUNTEER
Hampton Roads President & CEO Elizabeth Lloyd. “We
were selected from a field of over 350 volunteer
centers in the country, and we are delighted to
receive it during our 50th Anniversary
year. The board and staff of VOLUNTEER Hampton
Roads believe this award recognizes not only our
commitment and efforts to strengthen local
nonprofits through training and volunteer programs,
but it also pays tribute to Hampton Roads’ dynamic
nonprofit sector and extraordinary volunteers.”
The
award was established in 1996 to honor Governor
Romney and his personal commitment to Volunteer
Centers and to service at all levels of society.
Governor Romney was chair and CEO of American
Motors, three-term governor of Michigan and U.S.
Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. He was
a founding board member of the Points of Light
Foundation. Governor Romney never missed an
opportunity to encourage and nurture community
service. He believed that each person can make a
difference in the lives of others. He believed
passionately in the importance of a strong, viable
and highly visible network of Volunteer Centers.
The
award recognizes excellence in Volunteer Center core
competencies which include:
-
Connecting volunteers with the opportunity to
serve
-
Building local capacity for effective nonprofit
management
-
Promoting volunteerism
-
Participating in strategic initiatives that
mobilize volunteers to meet local needs
VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads has been serving Hampton Roads since
1957 and is a training and management organization
for the nonprofit sector, delivering its services
through three primary product streams: nonprofit
training, corporate programming and volunteerism.
It is
southeastern Virginia’s recognized leader of
programs, partnerships and services that maximize
the resources and impact of Hampton Roads’ nonprofit
sector and its volunteers.
VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads does not provide shelter for
the homeless or food to the hungry. However, its
work empowers nonprofits to accomplish these goals
more effectively. It empowers
individuals to make volunteering part of their
lifestyle and delivers leadership development
training for nonprofit boards and staff members.
