Global
Youth Service Day is the largest service event
in the world. Millions of youth participated in
the 20th Annual Global Youth Service Day.
VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads coordinated the project
at a local level on Saturday, April 26, 2008
throughout Hampton Roads. Hundreds of middle and
high school students volunteered in their
community through environmental clean ups.
The
goals of Global Youth Service Day are:
-
To
MOBILIZE youth to identify and address the needs
of their communities through service.
-
To
SUPPORT youth on a life-long path of service and
civic engagement.
-
To
EDUCATE the public, the media, and our
communities about the year-round contributions
of
young people as community leaders.
Project: Middle and high school
students were engaged in environmental clean-up
projects
throughout Hampton Roads at project sites including
Chesapeake Arboretum, First Landing State Park and
Norfolk Botanical Garden. Youth volunteers
were encouraged to continue to serve their
community by receiving a Global Youth Service Day
Environmental Education Resource CD.
