Donna Gill, President
Accounts Payable Manager - AvalonBay Communities, Inc.
Previous work history and/or education: September 2010 – Hired as a Construction and Development Project Accountant by AvalonBay Communities, Inc. and quickly progressed to Senior Project Accountant within two years.
BS - Business Administration-Accounting (minor-Management) – Old Dominion University
Favorite volunteer activity: There are so many great organizations and opportunities in the Hampton Roads area! The RocSolid Playground Build for a child with cancer is definitely one of my favorite activities that AvalonBay has participated in so far, along with Family Volunteer Day. Anything that supports children and animals is right up my alley!
Reason for being involved with HRCVC: The HRCVC has been invaluable in growing the Employee Volunteer Program at AvalonBay Communities. Now that AvalonBay is winding down the third year partnering with the HRCVC and the fourth year operating the Spirit of Caring Committee, I feel we are surpassing the initial goals and expectations for the program. The committee's mission and interests are well defined, associate participation is diverse across the Customer Care Center, and the processes to schedule, communicate and recognize participation are greatly improved.
Dawn Young, Vice President
Staff Accountant, Allfirst
Previous work history and/or education: Dawn discovered her ability for strong accounting practices at Thomas Nelson Community College in Newport News, Virginia. After graduation, Dawn worked as the billing processor for Per-Se Technologies that ended in 2004 so she could spend time at home with her brand new baby boy. As an active mom, Dawn has spent many years volunteering at the local school and other charitable community organizations.
Now at Allfirst, Dawn manages all aspects of Human Resources, Payroll, Accounts Payable/Receivable and Marketing. “I feel very blessed to be working for such a great company… who genuinely cares for their employees.”
Favorite volunteer activity: Dawn’s favorite volunteer activity is working with Roc Solid Foundation — building play-sets for young children or remodeling bedrooms for older children — all of whom are fighting pediatric cancer. “Roc Solid brings hope to families when hope can’t be found,” says Dawn. “I love to see the smiles on the children’s faces when they return from their day trip to see their new play-set or room remodel.”
Reason for being involved with HRCVC: Simply stated: To give back. Dawn understands the vision of HRCVC to create a place where leaders can collaborate on ideas to make volunteer efforts and opportunities a team sport.

Previous work history and/or education:
Master of Accounting – University of Virginia
BS – Commerce – University of Virginia
Favorite volunteer activity: One of my favorite volunteer activities is the work I perform for the Wave Warriors Surf Camp, a year-long effort focused on providing injured service members and their families with a memorable weekend getaway.
Reason for being involved with HRCVC: Through the HRCVC, I appreciate the opportunity to have an active role in connecting businesses with opportunities to help the local community. I am very appreciative of HRCVC’s continuous support of the MRD employee volunteer program. Their best practices and services have enabled MRD’s volunteer program to grow considerably over the years; especially MRD’s annual volunteer project for the Samaritan House, where employees provide a complete makeover to Samaritan House shelters.

Favorite volunteer activity: I enjoy taking part in voluntary activities that yield tangible results, whether a completed newsletter for organization-wide info sharing to a successful event that ultimately benefits others and makes participants glad they participated.
Reason for being involved with HRCVC: I believe that giving back using one’s time and talents help not only the organization in which he or she is involved and, obviously, the recipients of that organization’s efforts but also the one who is giving back. There’s a feeling of satisfaction and immeasurable reward that comes from doing for others, whether as an individual or as part of an organization like HRCVC. And I want to help my native Hampton Roads!
