Volunteers can choose from the 15 projects listed below that will be completed on Saturday, November 21. Projects that are on site will be held outdoors with space for social distancing, and all other projects will be completed remotely. Please note age restrictions, activity requirements, and inclement weather plans when choosing your project. The Pillowcase Project

American Red Cross of Coastal Virginia leads students grades 3-5 through an education program teaching personal and family preparedness and safety skills, local hazards, and basic coping skills.  This virtual project can be completed individually or in a group setting. Volunteers will be provided with all of the necessary items to complete this project.

Location: This project can be completed remotely.

Age Restrictions: This project is suitable for volunteers of all ages.

Beautify Grounds

Armed Services YMCA of Hampton Roads needs volunteers to beautify their grounds, improve curb appeal, and prevent premature deterioration of window structures. Volunteers will assist in basic landscaping and moderate building upkeep activities.

Location: This project will be completed outdoors at Armed Services YMCA, in case of rain volunteers will be provided with an indoor volunteer activity.

Age Restrictions: This project is suitable for volunteers 13 years and older.

Create Chew Toys for Shelter Dogs

Chesapeake Humane Society needs volunteers to create chew toys to keep their shelter dogs busy throughout the day. Volunteers will be provided with all of the necessary items to complete this project.

Mark Drains to Prevent Pollution

The City of Virginia Beach needs volunteers for their Storm Drain Marking Program. This program provides materials to residents and organizations to place stainless steel watershed medallions on storm drains to promote watershed awareness and help reduce pollution in our rivers and bays. Volunteers will receive a toolbox containing the number of medallions requested for the chosen location, construction adhesive, safety gloves and vests, instructions, and logging information. Volunteers will be provided with all of the necessary items to complete this project.

Location: This project will be completed outdoors around your chosen location in the City of Virginia Beach. This project can be completed on a different day in case of rain.

Age Restrictions: This project is suitable for volunteers 18 years and older.

Create a New Trail at Dunwoody Park

The City of Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation department will lead volunteers in installing a new trail system at Dunwoody Park. Trails will be approximately 1 mile in length. Volunteers will assist with vine, brush, shrub, and tree removal, and shoveling and raking dirt and debris. Volunteers will be provided with all of the necessary items to complete this project.

Location: This project will be completed outdoors at Dunwoody Park in Virginia Beach.

Age Restrictions: This project is suitable for volunteers 18 years and older.

Send Happy Mail to Homeless Neighbors

Compassion Cards needs volunteers to send happy mail to our local homeless neighbors! Participants will pick up a packet of 25 cards that they can work on in their own home/space, and return to Compassion Cards for mailing. Volunteers can decorate them, and write happy messages to be given to homeless folks in our area. This is a great project for families and individuals alike. Volunteers will be provided with all of the necessary items to complete this project.

Package Thanksgiving Baskets

ForKids, Inc needs volunteers to fill baskets with thanksgiving meal supplies for local homeless families. Last year almost 400 families were served through this program, but due to COVID-19 donations are down making volunteer support critical. Volunteers will be provided with all of the necessary items to complete this project.

Location: This project can be completed remotely.

Winterize Girl Scouts' Camp

Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast needs volunteers to help winterize Camp Skimino. Volunteers will go to each campsite, move mattresses to a pavilion and then untie ropes to lower the sides of the tents. 

Location: This project will be completed outdoors at Camp Skimino, in case of rain volunteers will be provided with an indoor volunteer activity.

Age Restrictions: This project is suitable for volunteers 18 years and older.

Create Wildflower Seed Bombs

Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve needs volunteers to create seed bombs that will be spread along their Bluebird Trail and given to visitors to spread within their own communities. Beneficiaries of this project include local wildlife and pollinators along with visitors who will be able to experience the beauty of the wildflowers once they bloom.  Volunteers will be provided with all of the necessary items to complete this project.

Create Birdseed Ornaments

Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve Needs volunteers to create birdseed ornaments for birds living in their preserve. This project not only benefits the birds that make Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve their home during the cooler months but also the visitors who get the chance to see the birds enjoying the treats! With plans to hang the ornaments throughout the trails, visitors will be even more likely to observe local and migrating birds as they make their way through the Preserve this year. Volunteers will be provided with all of the necessary items to complete this project.

Assist with Beautification & Plant Removal

Norfolk Botanical Gardens needs volunteers to assist with garden beautification. Volunteers will assist horticulturists with gardening, invasive plant removal, storm debris cleanup, pruning, and mulching. Volunteers will be provided with all of the necessary items to complete this project.

Location: This project will be completed outdoors at Norfolk Botanical Gardens, in case of rain volunteers will be rescheduled.

Age Restrictions: This project is suitable for volunteers 14 years and older.

Package Personal Hygiene Kits for Seniors

Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia (SSSEVA) needs volunteers to package personal hygiene items for their senior beneficiaries. Due to the pandemic and its adverse effects on our seniors. Many seniors have forgone going out into public spacing for their safety. While they are meeting the needs of providing healthy meals to our seniors, seniors need other personal care items. Volunteers will be provided with all of the necessary items to complete this project.

Package Senior Isolation Kits

Suffolk Meals on Wheels, Inc. needs volunteers to package items to combat social isolation and loneliness. Due to COVID19, seniors and individuals with disabilities have had to stay home and away from members of their communities. Suffolk Meals on Wheels has assisted them with meal delivery and wishes to help combat loneliness and isolation effects of COVID19. Volunteers will be provided with all of the necessary items to complete this project.

Package Welcome Kits

Tidewater Friends of Foster Care needs volunteers to package items for foster youth that are coming into care. Frequently, youth come into foster care with few belongings and they would benefit from receiving these essential items. Volunteers will be provided with all of the necessary items to complete this project.

Package Cold/Flu Get Well Kits

Village Family Outreach needs volunteers to package items for underserved communities that don't have immediate access to medical care that can treat their symptoms. These kits will be dispersed to women and children who visit their food pantry for assistance. Volunteers will be provided with all of the necessary items to complete this project.

Package Cold Weather Protection Kits

Village Family Outreach needs volunteers to package items for homeless individuals who need items to protect against cold winter months. These items are provided in order to keep the homeless individuals as safe as possible from the cold while they are outside away from the shelter. Volunteers will be provided with all of the necessary items to complete this project.

Package Shelter Welcome Baskets

YWCA South Hampton Roads needs volunteers to create Welcome Baskets for families escaping domestic violence. Due to COVID-19 families are quarantined for 14 days prior to entering their emergency shelter. These essential items would be provided to them upon entry to their quarantine space. Volunteers will be provided with all of the necessary items to complete this project.
