Communications & PR Internship

As a key member of the VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads team, this position is responsible for support and implementation of the marketing and communications strategy as set forth by the Services Coordinator.


ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS: 
  • Reports directly to the Services Coordinator 
    • Duration: May 21, 2018-August 10, 2018
    • Hours: TBD (Hours can be flexible with school or work schedule) 
    • Compensation: Internship position is not compensated. Intern may be eligible for college credits where applicable. 
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: 
  • Works directly with the Services Coordinator and senior staff and volunteers to support implementation for overall organizational projects and initiatives. 

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • Assist with development of creative concepts and marketing strategies for promoting the work of VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads
  • Use Canva to create concepts into print, online and other collateral materials. 
  • Develop content for promotional materials including direct mail pieces, print and electronic newsletters, web site and social media stories, media releases, and other materials, as needed. 
  • Assist with copyediting for the various promotional materials defined above. 
  • Assist in developing and implementing social media strategies aimed at increasing awareness about both VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads
  • Assist with brainstorming, creating and distributing marketing materials 
  • Draft basic publick relations materials including, news releases, media alerts, fact sheets, appeal letters and other materials as directed. 
  • Support the development and execution of volunteer-run events throughout the region as needed
  • Track organization's news coverage and seek opportunities with reporters 
  • Complete communications projects as assigned 
  • Assist staff in the communications, fundraising and volunteer departments, as needed. 
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS: ​
Candidates must: 
  • Be actively enrolled in, or a recent graduate of a university public relations, marketing, business or other related program. 
  • Current students must have at aleast a sophomore standing 
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communications skills; demonstrate ability to undertake public relations writing assignments 
  • Ability to interact professionally with stakeholders and media and demonstrate good judgement.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and focus on multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
SKILLS: 
Individual must be a strong communicator, have excellent written, presentation, oral communications and interpersonal skills. Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Familiarity with Canva and Constant Contact preferred. Individual must possess strong leadership skills, be able to motivate and influence others. Individual must be able to think creatively and strategically, have excellent judgement and be able to work in a changing environment.
