Family Volunteer Day is an international initiative of the Points of Light Institute and HandsOn Network to work with families, businesses, nonprofits and volunteer centers to make volunteering a family tradition.  Locally, Family Volunteer Day is planned and implemented by VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads. In 2012, over 700 volunteers packed over 16,000 pounds of nonperishable food for 13 local nonprofits -- primarily homeless and domestic abuse shelters -- the Saturday before Thanksgiving at Virginia Wesleyan College.
