Join Our Crew (Individual or Group)-Volunteer at Nauticus!

Nauticus does not accept court ordered volunteers.

Nauticus is a maritime discovery center located along the waterfront in downtown, Norfolk, VA, offering a unique form of experiential learning for all ages. Through interactive exhibits and STEM to STERN programming, Nauticus uses the museum, Battleship Wisconsin, sailing center, Schooner Virginia and the Half Moone Cruise & Celebration Center to tell the story of the maritime environment, industry, and the military.

Nauticus offers a wide variety of opportunities across our campus, enabling volunteers to gain insight to museum life and get involved in a number of different tasks and activites. 

Opportunities include (please also see positions listed separately on Volunteer Hampton Roads): 

  • Battleship, Education, and Guest Experience Crew
  • Exhibition Support
  • Student Internships/Teen Programs
  • Sailing Instructors
  • Schooner Virginia Deckhand Educators
  • Gift Shop Associates
  • Guest Ambassadors (Admissions)

Group Restoration Projects- Restore BB64 on the Battleship Wisconsin, Green Team Community Cleanups, Special Event Projects (i.e. Exhibit Openings, Winterfest Prep, Cruise Operations, and Fundraiser Event Support)

All potential volunteers will be required to: 
1) Submit an online application. The application link will be emailed to you after expressing interest on the VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads website.
2) Upon receipt of application, you will be contacted for an interview. 
3) Interview notes will go the Department Volunteer Coordinator/Liaison/Supervisor for approval. 
4) Upon approval, individual volunteers will be need to complete the following onboarding steps: Nauticus New Volunteer Orientation, Nauticus Volunteer Handbook, Volunteer Agreement Form, Selfie Photo, City of Norfolk Background Check for adults (18+) and Department Volunteer Coordinator/Liaison/Supervisor Schedule Contact. 
5) Upon approval for Group Volunteers, the Group Coordinator will need to: share with the group members the Nauticus Group Guidelines and submit a Group Memorandum of Understanding Form. 
6) Department Volunteer Coordinators will work with you to schedule your first day. 
7) All individual volunteers will be required to serve at least a minimum of 50 hours.
