Maerine "Mimi" Mitchell, CEO
Having been dedicated to the Hampton Roads nonprofit community over the last 15 years, Maerine "Mimi" Mitchell earned her bachelor’s degree from Virginia Wesleyan University and her master's degree from Arcadia University in PA. She holds a certification as a family mediator for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Volunteerism, corporate philanthropy, and service hold profound significance for her and have played a pivotal role in initiating her professional career, including her service as an AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America). Currently, Mimi serves on the Habitat Virginia Board of Directors. She is a 2023 graduate of the CIVIC Leadership Institute, a 2019 South Hampton Roads Unsung Hero, and the recipient of the Hampton Roads Exemplar Award in 2014. Additionally, she is actively working on publishing her first fiction novel for young adults. Mimi was born in New York City but currently resides in Portsmouth with her son.
Alana Slaughter, Director of Corporate Partnerships
Alana Slaughter is a Virginia Beach native and joins VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads after 14 years of sales experience in the hospitality and information technology fields where she focused on building lasting relationships and became a trusted advisor for her clients. She earned her Bachelors of Business Administration at James Madison University and takes pride in being the liaison between corporate and volunteer communities. Alana is an avid soccer player and enjoys living at the oceanfront with her husband and very spoiled rescue cat.
Lexie Martinez, Director of Communications & Software
Lexie Martinez became involved with Volunteer Hampton Roads in November 2017 when she started as a Public Relations and Marketing Intern. Volunteerism has been a part of her life since high school when she began volunteering for various outreach programs through her church. She holds a bachelor's degree in communications and is passionate about making a difference in the community through nonprofit work.
Jeremiah Lawrence, Intern
Jeremiah Lawrence is a student at Tidewater Community College, Class of 2024 pursuing a degree in Network Administration. He is also a 2021 graduate of Kellam High School in Virginia Beach. Jeremiah is an active volunteer who is commited to his community, including at TCC where he engages with students to better orient them to college life. Jeremiah holds leadership positions in on-campus clubs including as Treasurer of the Anime Club, Event Planner of Students Activies, and as Senator of the Student Government Association.
