Community Outreach Volunteer

Location: Remote / Hybrid, with outreach focused on Northern Virginia, Central Virginia, and Southeastern Virginia / Hampton Roads
Time Commitment: 4–8 hours per week
Length of Commitment: 3–6 months preferred
Reports To: VHCDC CEO or designated Housing Counseling Program staff
Volunteer Type: Community outreach, marketing, administrative support, housing education outreach


Key Responsibilities

Community Outreach

The volunteer will help identify and contact organizations that serve or regularly communicate with renters, including:

  • Apartment communities and property managers
  • Libraries
  • Community colleges
  • Employers
  • Churches and faith-based organizations
  • Civic leagues and neighborhood associations
  • Housing authorities and resident services programs
  • Family Self-Sufficiency programs
  • Realtors, lenders, and community partners
  • Local governments and housing offices
  • Nonprofit and workforce development organizations

The volunteer may send introductory emails, make follow-up calls, share flyers, and invite partners to distribute VHCDC’s homebuyer education information to renters.


Promote First-Time Home Buyers College

The volunteer will help promote upcoming VHCDC classes by:

  • Sharing class registration links
  • Posting approved content on social media
  • Sending flyers and QR-code links to partners
  • Helping maintain a monthly outreach calendar
  • Following up with interested partners
  • Encouraging renters to register for VHCDC’s First-Time Home Buyers College
  • Helping track which partners generate interest or referrals

Administrative and Tracking Support

The volunteer may help VHCDC track campaign activity, including:

  • Partner contact lists
  • Outreach emails sent
  • Follow-up dates
  • QR code or registration link activity, where available
  • Class registrations by referral source
  • Event and presentation opportunities
  • Social media posting schedule
  • Interested renters who request follow-up

The volunteer may use simple tools such as Google Sheets, Excel, Canva, email, and VHCDC-approved forms.


Ideal Volunteer Qualifications

The ideal volunteer is someone who is:

  • Reliable and able to follow through on assignments
  • Comfortable communicating by email and phone
  • Organized and detail-oriented
  • Friendly, professional, and community-minded
  • Comfortable using basic technology
  • Interested in housing, community development, financial empowerment, or nonprofit work
  • Able to work independently with periodic check-ins
  • Respectful of confidentiality and client privacy
  • Able to use approved messaging without making promises about program eligibility or funding

Helpful but Not Required

Experience in any of the following areas is helpful but not required:

  • Community outreach
  • Social media marketing
  • Nonprofit administration
  • Real estate
  • Mortgage lending
  • Housing counseling
  • Property management
  • Public relations
  • Canva or graphic design
  • Event planning
  • Spanish-language communication
  • CRM, spreadsheets, or database tracking

Time Commitment

Preferred commitment:

4–8 hours per week for at least 3 months

A 6-month commitment is ideal because the campaign will involve repeated outreach, monthly class promotion, and ongoing follow-up with renters and community partners.

Flexible scheduling is available. Some evening or weekend availability may be helpful for community events or virtual information sessions, but it is not required.


Training and Support Provided

VHCDC will provide:

  • Orientation to VHCDC’s programs and services
  • Approved outreach messages
  • Flyer templates and QR codes
  • Social media language
  • Partner email templates
  • Basic training on fair housing and confidentiality expectations
  • Instructions on how to refer interested renters to VHCDC staff
  • Regular check-ins with VHCDC leadership or program staff

What Volunteers Will Not Do

To protect clients, volunteers, and VHCDC, volunteers will not:

  • Provide housing counseling
  • Review personal financial documents
  • Determine eligibility for down-payment assistance
  • Promise grant funding or mortgage approval
  • Give legal, tax, credit, or financial advice
  • Handle sensitive client information unless specifically authorized and trained
  • Speak on behalf of VHCDC beyond approved outreach messages

All interested renters will be referred to VHCDC staff for official program information, counseling, enrollment, and eligibility review.


Desired Outcomes

This volunteer role will help VHCDC:

  • Reach more renters across Virginia
  • Increase awareness of VHCDC’s First-Time Home Buyers College
  • Build new referral partnerships
  • Increase class registrations
  • Connect renters to housing counseling and homeownership readiness services
  • Expand outreach in Northern Virginia, Central Virginia, and Hampton Roads
  • Help more first-time buyers learn about down-payment assistance opportunities
