Senior Companions - Friends Helping Friends

Senior Companions are volunteers who provide assistance and friendship to seniors who have difficulty with daily living tasks such as shopping or paying bills. The program aims to keep seniors independent longer and provide assistance to family caregivers.

Isolation and stress are two of the top reasons for health issues in all ages. Research is now showing that simply having a friend can decrease both stress and isolation leading to a decrease in onset of health problems including dementia and Alzheimer's. Your friendship can dramatically impact someone's health for the better. No technical experience needed! Senior Companions are part of the National Senior Corps program and focused on a "friends-helping-friends" volunteer program model. Senior Companion volunteers are matched with clients who live right in their own communities. Volunteers must be ages 55+, retired, and meet income guidelines to join this program.

Seniors who need a SCP volunteer are living independently and need companionship or a helping hand. SCP volunteers pay a friendly visit and often perform a variety of tasks, such as shopping for groceries, writing a letter, or fixing a light meal. As a senior companion volunteer, you play a vital role in the life of your friend, providing a much-needed link from the community and helping them to remain independent and connected to the community.
