Development Internship

Name of Internship Development Intern

 

Summary of Internship:

Internship role consists of general support of the Development office including fundraising, grant research, donor prospecting, assisting with a variety of fundraisers, donor cultivation, stewardship and general office duties such as mail preparation and filing.

 

Length of Internship (usually based on a semester to semester basis; needs a finite ending point)

1 semester Summer (as available)

2 semesters

# hours required weekly 1-2 days per week on a set schedule

 

Qualifications for this Internship:

· Museum interest

· Majoring in: Museum Studies, Management, Marketing, Business, or Communications

· Outgoing & professional

 

Experience Gained:

· Overall knowledge of VLM & non-profit status

· Overall perspective of Development operations

· Exposure to different elements of Development Practices (fundraisers, special events, grants)

· Fundraising

· Altru database experience (not for summer/short term intern)

· Grant experience/research

· Special event fundraising experience

 

Duties -

· Support and learn overall non-profit fundraising in the Development Office

· Research potential grant opportunities with possible grant submittal opportunities

· Assist with special event planning and soliciting gift in kind donations for auctions & raffles

· Prospect for potential corporate and individual donors

· Filing and preparation of office solicitation and invitation mailings

· Writing opportunities depending on skill set

· Assist with fulfillment of Community Education Program complimentary admission

· There is a potential for specific development focus depending on the interns skills and area of expertise.

 

Projects – The intern will choose from these possibilities:

 

· Possible grant related report if intern participates in grant submittal

· Possible Reflection Paper detailing the impact the internship had on your career choices

· Project based on Student Interest & Skill Set as approved by the Development staff

 

Expectations -

· Professional and confidential

· 2 semester minimum

· 6-8 hours per week on a set schedule

· Special event hours to be arranged as applicable

 

Confidentiality –

· All interns will sign a confidentiality waiver

· Donor records will be kept confidential

· Types and nature of communications within the office and clientele to remain confidential

 

Evaluation –

· Midpoint evaluation at half way mark of required hours using standard museum evaluation tool

· Final evaluation at end of internship

 

Feedback -

· Half-way point interview/review of current projects

· Exit interview to include their most important take-away related to their career

· Candidates will be interviewed by Development Department staff

· Background check will be conducted after successful interview
