Invasive Species Management - Removal

In our efforts to conserve the last parcel of wilderness in the Hoffler Creek watershed, we are currently focused on identifying, removing, and preventing invasive species throughout the Wildlife Preserve. With 142 acres to manage, this is a long-term project that will require multiple phases of work and emphasis on one area at a time.

We are currently working on removing invasive wisteria in the northwest portion of the preserve. This fast-growing vine has contributed to the loss of mature trees in the area, creating a hole in the forest canopy. In combination with our annual Goatscaping program, help from volunteers is essential to reclaiming this habitat. Vines of varying thickness need to be cut at the root and removed from the trees they are climbing. We have loppers, smaller clippers, and handsaws for volunteers to use.

Required Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the above-listed plants and other invasive species commonly found in Southeast Virginia
  • The ability to correctly identify these plants with little to no assistance from staff
  • The ability to use loppers, hand saws, shovels, and other tools to remove the plants

Not Required, but Helpful:

  • Experience using a wood chipper or the willingness to work with our Maintenance Volunteer to chip woody materials after removal
  • Experience with the controlled application of herbicides
The opportunity date and time you are looking for is no longer available.
