For over 20 years VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads has hosted Family Volunteer Day, a global day of service. Each year we plan and facilitate service projects for over 400 community volunteers who meet various community needs through organized volunteer service.
This year we will be partnering with the following nonprofits.
Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve- Reading Club Kits
Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve is starting a 4-week reading program in March, National Reading Month, to educate children about environmental stewardship. Volunteers will create reading kits that include tracking cards, bookmarks, books, and stickers.
Kennedy’s Angel Gowns- Baby and Me Bracelets
Kennedy’s Angel Gowns works to break the silence and offer help to families who experience the tragic and untimely death of an infant. Volunteers will create Baby and Me Bracelets to be given to affected families.
LGBT Life Center- Refresh and Cleaning Kits
The LGBT Life Center empowers the LGBTQ community and all people affected by HIV. Volunteers will create Refresh and Cleaning Kits that contain basic hygiene supplies for those in need.
Norfolk Botanical Garden- Invasive Plant Removal
The Norfolk Botanical Garden currently manages the gardens around the Greer Environmental Sciences Center at Virginia Wesleyan University. Volunteers will assist in removing invasive plants from these areas.
Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia- Emergency Kits
Senior Services provides seniors and their caregivers access to programs and services so they may live their lives with choice and dignity in their communities. Volunteers will create Emergency Kits for Seniors who may be stranded in their homes during disaster events.
Sinkinson Dyslexia Foundation- Dyslexia Tutoring Kits
The Sinkinson Dyslexia Foundation teaches people of all ages and backgrounds who are dyslexic to read. Volunteers will work to put together packets for children from low income families with dyslexia who are receiving one-on-one tutoring.
Veteran’s HomeFront- Homeless Blessing Bags
Veteran’s HomeFront assists veterans and their families out of homelessness. Volunteers will put together Blessing Bags for those who are currently homeless. This project includes writing and drawing letters of encouragement along with packing supplies for each bag.
Virginia Beach SPCA- No Bake, Peanut-Butter-Free Dog Treats
The VBSPCA works with and houses animals in a shelter situation to eliminate animal suffering. Volunteers will create no-bake, peanut-butter-free treats for the dogs that are housed.
YWCA of South Hampton Roads- Shelter Welcome Baskets
YWCA is dedicated to promoting peace justice, freedom, and dignity for all. Volunteers will create Shelter Welcome Baskets containing hygiene and support items for those in shelters.
