Internship Information

VLM Internships are primarily designated for students enrolled in college or program of academic study. Candidates not enrolled in college will be considered on a case by case basis and must follow all guidelines and term lengths.

Name of Internship: HR Intern

Summary of Internship:

The Human Resources internship will provide the opportunity for a student to learn the daily HR functions performed in a non-profit.  The HR Internship will help the museum in its endeavor to grow the department and meet goals outlined in the strategic plan.

Length of Internship: Summer only

Number of hours required weekly: up to 20

Qualifications for this Internship:  Enrolled in academic program of study at a college or university; professional demeanor, friendly, ability to take initiative.

Experience gained from this internship:  The intern will learn and be exposed to an overview of daily Human Resources functions that will include but are not limited to: onboarding processes, along with how to prepare for open season, and the implementation of policies contained within the employee handbook. 

Duties and Tasks the intern will be involved in the following:

  • Assisting with new hire onboarding and off boarding
  • Improving available benefit communication
  • Review internship program and develop metrics for success
  • Administrative tasks such as filing and uniform inventory
  • Assisting with new processes and procedures that improve Human Resources functions

Culminating Project:  The intern will create incentive opportunities for high performing employees, and will summarize their work in a 1-2 page reflection paper to be turned in at the conclusion of the Internship.

Expectations of this internship: 

  • Complete between 180 and 200 total hours of service
  • Give advance notice of any days off
  • Follow museum policy including dress code, cell phone policy, and other requirements

Confidentiality: All interns will sign a confidentiality waiver regarding information they may come in contact with during the internship.

 

Evaluation: The intern will be evaluated using the museums standard intern evaluation form at the conclusion of the internship.  After the first week of the internship the Human Resources Manager will develop basic goals with a timeline for accomplishment with the intern.  The HR Manager will meet weekly with the intern to discuss successes and /or any issues.

Feedback: The intern can provide feedback to the HR Manager during the weekly meetings, and as desired by both parties.
